
Staten Island Shipyard Explosion Kills One Civilian, Injures 34 Emergency Responders
A civilian has died and more than 30 people have sustained injuries following an explosion on a barge at a Staten Island shipyard in New York City. Officials confirmed 34 individuals, including firefighters and first responders, were hurt in the incident on Friday.
The New York City Fire Department stated the fatality was a civilian. The emergency began around 15:30 local time with reports of trapped workers and a fire. A subsequent explosion erupted about 50 minutes later, necessitating further emergency deployment.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the event as a “complex, fast-developing emergency situation.” Two workers were reportedly confined as the fire progressed. Firefighters arriving at the scene located a fire within the basement of a metal structure at the dock.
The cause of the fire and subsequent explosion remains under investigation. As of Friday evening, one fire marshal was in a critical condition and one firefighter was in a serious condition, according to Mayor Mamdani. Authorities have advised the public to anticipate traffic disruptions and road closures in the affected area.
