Stewart Irwin Convicted of Gross Negligence Manslaughter After Mother's Death
A jury at Ipswich Crown Court has convicted Stewart Irwin, 53, of gross negligence manslaughter. He was found responsible for the death of his mother, Veronica Irwin, 74, who lay dying for an estimated two weeks in the bathroom of their Lowestoft flat.
The court heard that Ms Irwin suffered a fall in early September 2021, after which her condition rapidly declined. During this period, her son, Stewart Irwin, failed to seek medical attention or provide adequate care. Prosecutors detailed how Ms Irwin developed severe pressure sores and pneumonia, ultimately succumbing to her injuries and neglect.
Evidence presented by the Crown Prosecution Service indicated that Mr Irwin was aware of his mother's deteriorating health, yet he made no attempt to contact emergency services or social care. He instead allowed her to remain on the bathroom floor, where she died. The court also heard that Mr Irwin continued to live in the flat following his mother's death, making no immediate report to authorities.
Mr Irwin is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date, with the judge ordering a pre-sentence report. The verdict underscores a profound failure of care, resulting in a tragic and preventable death.
