Stewart Irwin Jailed for Gross Negligence Manslaughter After Mother's Death
Stewart Irwin, 53, has been sentenced to six years and six months in prison for the gross negligence manslaughter of his mother, Veronica Irwin. The 74-year-old was left to die on a bathroom floor in the flat they shared in Kirkby, Merseyside, for approximately two weeks.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Ms Irwin suffered a fractured leg in a fall and subsequently developed pressure sores and deep vein thrombosis. Medical experts stated she would have experienced significant pain and distress during her final days.
Neglect and Failed Intervention
Despite being aware of his mother's deteriorating condition, Mr Irwin failed to seek medical attention. He instead provided her with food and water where she lay on the floor. Authorities became involved after a district nurse, unable to contact Ms Irwin, visited the property. The nurse discovered Ms Irwin's body on 24 August 2021, two weeks after she was last seen alive by a family friend.
The court was informed that Mr Irwin had a history of alcohol misuse and had been his mother's primary carer for over a decade. Prosecutor Neil Fawcett highlighted that Ms Irwin was “extremely vulnerable” and entirely dependent on her son. Mr Irwin initially denied the charge, claiming his mother refused help, but later pleaded guilty.
Judge Denis Costello condemned Irwin's actions as a “selfish and wicked dereliction of duty,” underscoring the severity of his neglect towards his vulnerable mother.
