StubHub UK Ordered to Refund 50,000 Customers for Hidden Fees, Receives Fine
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has mandated that StubHub UK issue refunds to 50,000 customers affected by undisclosed charges. This directive follows findings that the online ticket reseller failed to adequately display booking and delivery fees upfront, in contravention of consumer protection laws. The CMA has also levied a fine against StubHub for its continued non-compliance.
Customers were frequently presented with a headline price that excluded additional costs, which were only revealed later in the transaction process. This practice has been deemed misleading and illegal by the regulatory body, which has been scrutinising the secondary ticketing market for several years.
This action by the CMA underscores a broader regulatory effort to ensure transparency and fairness in digital marketplaces. The authority has previously taken similar enforcement action against other platforms within the secondary ticketing sector, aiming to curb practices that disadvantage consumers.
StubHub UK is now required to process these refunds and implement clearer pricing structures to avoid further penalties. The exact amount of the fine has not been publicly disclosed, but the ruling signals a firmer stance by UK regulators on consumer protection in online transactions.
