Thames Water Imposes Hosepipe Ban for 15 Million Customers Across London and Thames Valley

Thames Water has implemented a hosepipe ban across London and the Thames Valley, a restriction impacting approximately 15 million customers. This directive prohibits the use of hosepipes for domestic outdoor activities, including watering gardens, cleaning cars, and filling paddling pools, effective from 24 August.

The utility company attributed the necessity of the ban to the prolonged dry weather and three consecutive heatwaves that have significantly reduced water levels. Despite recent rainfall, the cumulative effect on reservoirs and boreholes means water resources remain considerably below average for the time of year. Official data confirms July 2022 as the driest in England since 1935, with specific areas like the South East experiencing only 6.9mm of rain, 10% of the monthly average.

Thames Water's decision follows similar restrictions imposed by other water providers in southern England, a region particularly susceptible to drought conditions. The move underscores the systemic challenges in water management and infrastructure resilience across the UK, especially as climate patterns shift.
