Top Foreign Office Official Ousted Amid Mandelson Vetting Controversy
Senior Diplomat to Leave Post
Sir Olly Robbins, the permanent under-secretary at the Foreign Office, is to leave his position after a departmental decision to bypass the security vetting process for Lord Mandelson's role as US ambassador was confirmed. It is understood that both Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have withdrawn their confidence in Sir Olly, leading to his effective sacking.
Vetting Process Overruled
The government has confirmed that the Foreign Office disregarded the recommendation of the independent vetting agency, allowing Lord Mandelson to assume the ambassadorship. A spokesperson clarified that neither Sir Keir nor any minister were aware of Lord Mandelson's vetting failure until earlier this week. Lord Mandelson, appointed in December 2024 and taking up the post in February 2025, was subsequently dismissed seven months later due to his connections with the late Jeffrey Epstein.
Prime Minister Under Pressure
Sir Keir Starmer is facing intense calls for his resignation over allegations he misled Parliament. He repeatedly stated in Prime Minister's Questions on 10 September 2025 that 'full due process' was followed in Lord Mandelson's appointment. The Ministerial Code stipulates that ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament are expected to resign. Opposition leaders across the political spectrum have demanded Sir Keir's departure, accusing him of either incompetence or deliberate deception. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated that the Prime Minister either 'knew that Mandelson failed the security vetting and lied to us in Parliament, on TV repeatedly, or he didn't know, didn't ask and said he had passed the security vetting - which means he is hopelessly incompetent.'
The revelations have also prompted a letter from the Scottish National Party to Sir Laurie Magnus, the independent adviser on ministerial standards, requesting an investigation into whether the Prime Minister deliberately misled the public.
Parliamentary Scrutiny and Future Steps
Sir Keir is expected to issue a statement on the matter in the House of Commons on Monday. The controversy has also drawn attention to evidence given by Sir Olly Robbins to the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee last November, where Labour MP Emily Thornberry felt she had been 'misled' regarding the vetting process.
The government previously committed to releasing documents related to Lord Mandelson's appointment following a parliamentary vote. Sir Keir is reportedly 'furious' having discovered Lord Mandelson's vetting failure only on Tuesday evening during the process of preparing these documents for publication.
