Trump Cautions UK Trade Deal 'Can Always Be Changed' Amid Strained Relations
Former US President Donald Trump has cautioned that America's trade deal with the United Kingdom "can always be changed." Speaking recently, Mr Trump asserted, "We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to," when questioned about the state of the enduring 'special relationship'.
Strained Bilateral Ties
Mr Trump, who has been a vocal critic of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following the UK's decision not to participate in the US-Israel war against Iran in late February, indicated that the relationship had "been better." He starkly articulated his view, stating, "It's the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there."
The US President emphasised that while the relationship had "been better, but it's sad," the trade deal, which saw the UK become the first nation to agree a tariff reduction with his administration last May, reducing import taxes on specific goods, "can always be changed."
Royal Visit Unaffected
Despite the evident diplomatic strain, Mr Trump assured that the current state of affairs would not overshadow the imminent state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the US. He remarked, "I've known the King for a long time, and he's not involved in that process." He expressed anticipation for the visit, stating, "Just being with him. I've known him for a long time. He's wonderful."
