Trump Rejects Claims He Restricted Ukraine's Starlink Access Amid Russian Attacks
Former US President Donald Trump has dismissed accusations that he was responsible for restricting Ukraine's access to the Starlink satellite internet network. The denial comes after reports indicated that speed limitations on the service critically impeded Ukrainian air defence capabilities during a series of deadly Russian attacks earlier this week.
The Starlink system, operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has been a vital communication tool for Ukrainian forces since the 2022 invasion. However, its operational parameters, including geographical availability and bandwidth, have been subject to controversy and shifting control.
Critics argue that any external interference with Starlink's functionality during active combat zones constitutes a direct undermining of Ukraine's defensive efforts. The effectiveness of air defence systems, particularly in repelling drone and missile strikes, is heavily reliant on unimpeded, high-speed data transmission for real-time threat assessment and response coordination.
The incident highlights the precarious reliance of state actors on private, commercially operated infrastructure for critical military functions, offering considerable leverage to non-state entities and raising questions about accountability and strategic independence.
