Trump's £7.9 Billion Defamation Claim Against Broadcaster Gets New Federal Judge
A recently appointed federal judge in Florida will now preside over Donald Trump's £7.9 billion ($10 billion) defamation lawsuit. Judge David Nuffer, nominated by Trump for the Southern District of Florida, has replaced Judge Raag Singhal on the case.
The lawsuit, initiated in December, claims a UK broadcaster's report on Trump's business activities in Scotland contained "false and defamatory statements." The legal action centres on a programme which scrutinised the financing of Trump's golf resorts in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, specifically questioning how the properties were funded given substantial losses.
Trump's legal team alleges the report suggested a suspicious acquisition of funds for the golf courses. The broadcaster has maintained that its journalism is fair and accurate, stating it will vigorously defend its reporting. This change in judicial oversight introduces another layer of scrutiny to a case already highlighting the fraught relationship between powerful figures and investigative journalism.
