Uber Deploys Fifteen Robotaxis with Safety Drivers in London Trial

Uber has launched a limited trial of autonomous taxi services in London, deploying fifteen vehicles that will operate with human safety drivers present. This programme, which commenced operations today, utilises robotaxis developed by Waymo and Motional, two prominent developers in autonomous driving technology. The introduction of these vehicles represents Uber's first deployment of robotaxis in the United Kingdom.

For the duration of this trial, all autonomous Uber vehicles will be confined to a predetermined route. The primary function of the onboard safety driver is to monitor the vehicle's performance and be prepared to assume manual control if required. This measure is intended to ensure passenger safety and provide a failsafe during the experimental phase of the service.

Passengers requesting a ride through the Uber application may be assigned one of these autonomous vehicles if their journey aligns with the designated trial route. Uber has stated that the programme aims to gather real-world data on the operation and integration of autonomous vehicles into its existing ride-hailing network, with a view to potential future expansion of driverless services in the UK.
