UK Car Washes, Vape Shops Retain Licence to Sponsor Foreign Skilled Workers

Certain UK businesses, including car washes, takeaways, and vape shops, continue to hold licences permitting them to sponsor skilled foreign workers, even after the government introduced stricter visa regulations. These new rules, implemented in July 2025, were designed to limit the skilled worker scheme predominantly to graduate-level roles with a minimum salary of £41,700.

An analysis of Home Office data reveals that numerous companies operating car washes, fast-food outlets, and convenience stores are listed as approved sponsors. For instance, more than 300 car washes, 260 vape shops, and nearly 3,000 takeaway restaurants are currently authorised to bring in workers from abroad.

The government's stated intention behind the visa changes was to reduce net migration and ensure that foreign workers are primarily filling higher-skilled, higher-paid positions. However, the continued ability of sectors often associated with lower-wage employment to sponsor workers suggests a persistent demand across a broader economic spectrum than initially implied by the policy revisions.
