UK Exposes Russian Submarine Operation Targeting Critical Undersea Infrastructure
Defence Secretary John Healey has disclosed that three Russian submarines were involved in a "covert" operation targeting undersea cables and pipelines in waters north of the UK. A British warship and aircraft were deployed to deter this "malign" activity, though Mr Healey confirmed there was no evidence of damage to UK infrastructure in the Atlantic.
Direct Warning to Moscow
Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, Mr Healey stated: "We see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences."
The UK is heavily reliant on these undersea cables for over 90% of its daily internet traffic and a network of pipelines, predominantly in the North Sea, for essential energy supplies, including significant gas imports from Norway.
Operation Details and Response
Mr Healey detailed that an Akula-class submarine was used as a diversionary tactic while two Guggi spy submarines conducted surveillance. The Royal Navy, including HMS St Albans and RFA Tidespring, along with Merlin helicopters, tracked all three Russian vessels. Other allied nations, notably Norway, assisted in monitoring the activity.
"Our armed forces left [Russia] in no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert, as President Putin planned, and that their attempted secret operation had been exposed," Mr Healey asserted, highlighting the use of sonar buoys to signal continuous surveillance.
Russia as Primary Threat
Mr Healey further claimed that Putin sought to exploit global distractions, particularly conflicts in the Middle East, and reiterated that Russia poses the "primary threat to UK security." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment, vowing to protect the British public from the repercussions of Russian aggression and to expose such destabilising activities.
This incident follows previous reports of Russia engaging in "hybrid warfare" against Western Europe, aiming to deter support for Ukraine. The Russian embassy has previously denied any interest in British underwater communications.
