UK Hotel Asylum Seeker Numbers Halve to 10,000 in Twelve Months

The number of asylum seekers accommodated in UK hotels has fallen by over 60% in the last year, according to newly published Home Office statistics. As of May 2024, around 10,000 individuals were housed in hotels, a substantial decrease from the 25,600 recorded in May 2023.

This reduction forms part of a broader decline across several immigration metrics. Legal migration arrivals have decreased, as have the overall number of asylum claims submitted. Furthermore, the number of individuals arriving via small boats has also seen a reduction.

The policy shift away from hotel accommodation for asylum seekers has been a stated objective of the government, which has faced consistent criticism regarding the cost and suitability of these arrangements. While the raw numbers show a clear decline in hotel reliance, the impact on alternative accommodation provisions and the wider asylum processing system remains under scrutiny.
