UN Agency Predicts 'Supersized' El Ni o, Global Economic Disruptions Expected

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has cautioned that a 'supersized' El Ni o event is on the horizon, threatening substantial disruption to global economies and weather patterns. This natural climate cycle, characterised by the warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, is expected to bring severe consequences, particularly to vulnerable nations.

Forecasters anticipate this El Ni o to be more intense than average, potentially exacerbating extreme weather events worldwide. Such occurrences historically lead to droughts in some regions, devastating floods in others, and widespread agricultural failures. The WMO’s assessment points to a protracted period of instability, impacting food security, water resources, and critical infrastructure.

Past El Ni o events have demonstrated the potential for significant economic reverberations, from commodity price volatility to increased humanitarian aid requirements.
