UN Court Rejects Ratko Mladić Jail Release Despite His Dire Health Condition
A United Nations court has rejected an appeal by convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladić for release from jail, even as his legal team cited his rapidly deteriorating health and a recent suspected stroke.
Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, in a written ruling, acknowledged Mladić, 84, is "in the final stages of his life" and described his current situation as "dire." However, she asserted that the UN prison hospital in The Hague offers "high quality" medical conditions and "comprehensive and compassionate treatment," negating any need for his transfer elsewhere.
Mladić, known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992-95 wars in the former Yugoslavia. This sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021.
His lawyers had argued for immediate provisional or conditional release to a Serbian-speaking hospital or hospice, citing assessments from two doctors indicating a "high risk of imminent death." Serbia's government had reportedly expressed willingness to provide guarantees for his release.
Mladić commanded Bosnian Serb forces responsible for "ethnic cleansing," the siege of Sarajevo which resulted in over 10,000 deaths, and the massacre of 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica. The Bosnian war led to over 100,000 fatalities and displaced approximately two million people. Victims' groups have consistently opposed his release, characterising such requests as a "legal tactic" rather than a genuine humanitarian plea.
