US Aviation Authority Targets Gamers to Tackle Air Traffic Controller Shortage
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively recruiting video gamers to fill crucial air traffic control vacancies. A new campaign explicitly calls for individuals adept at gaming to consider a career in air traffic control, with the hiring window opening next week.
Targeting a New Generation
The campaign's promotional video features the Xbox One logo before showcasing a montage of gamers and air traffic controllers, asserting: "You've been training for this." The advertisement also highlights the attractive remuneration, stating a potential salary of $155,000 (£115,000) after three years of service.
US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy emphasised the need for the FAA to adapt its recruitment strategies to engage the next generation of controllers, tapping into a demographic that possesses many of the essential skills required for the role. This echoes a previous "Level Up" campaign from the Biden administration with a similar objective.
Addressing Staffing Challenges
Air traffic control is a safety-critical profession demanding quick decision-making under pressure and technical expertise. However, the sector has faced persistent staffing shortages for years, a problem projected to worsen. Although staffing levels are currently at their highest in six years, the FAA previously indicated a shortfall of at least 3,000 controllers, with twice that number expected to depart by 2028.
Nick Daniels, President of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, voiced the union's support for this innovative recruitment approach. He welcomed the expansion of the candidate pool, provided that "rigorous standards required of this safety-critical profession" are maintained.
This recruitment drive follows several high-profile incidents involving aircraft and air traffic control, underscoring the vital importance of a fully staffed and highly skilled workforce.
