UVF Loughinisland Massacre Survivors Awarded Millions in Compensation for 1992 Attack
Survivors of the 1994 Loughinisland pub attack in County Down, in which six men were shot dead by the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), have been awarded substantial compensation, believed to be one of the largest payouts related to a Troubles-era case.
The six men, who were watching a World Cup football match when loyalist paramilitaries opened fire, included Barney Green, 87, and Adrian Rogan, Malcolm Jenkinson, Daniel McCreanor, Patrick O'Hare, and Eamon Byrne. The attack on the Heights Bar in Loughinisland has been subject to extensive scrutiny, particularly regarding allegations of collusion between the UVF and security forces.
A 2016 report by the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Dr Michael Maguire, concluded that there had been significant police failings and collusion in the investigation. The report found that Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers had been aware of the UVF unit responsible, yet failed to prevent the massacre or adequately investigate it afterwards. Dr Maguire specifically cited the destruction of evidence and a failure to pursue evidential lines of inquiry.
This financial redress follows years of legal efforts by the victims' families and survivors. The compensation package underscores the long-standing and documented failures of the state apparatus to protect its citizens and pursue justice, particularly when paramilitary actions involved alleged state complicity. Such settlements, whilst significant, often emerge decades after the initial atrocities, highlighting the protracted struggle for accountability in Northern Ireland.
