Uways Hussain and Usmon Mahmood Jailed for Kingsway 130mph Fatal Collision
A driver and a passenger who recorded themselves travelling at speeds exceeding 130mph (209kmh) in a 30mph restricted zone have been imprisoned following a collision that killed a pedestrian.
Uways Hussain, 20, from Burnage, and Usmon Mahmood filmed their reckless behaviour, which included inhaling from a balloon, disregarding red lights, and dangerously weaving through traffic on Manchester's Kingsway. Their actions culminated in the death of Sylvester Abayomi, 50.
Hussain received an 11-year and eight-month sentence for causing death by dangerous driving. Mahmood was jailed for 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting the dangerous driving that resulted in death. The vehicle, owned by Mahmood, struck Mr Abayomi at approximately 04:36 GMT on 9 March.
The court heard that Mr Abayomi had entered Kingsway on a green light when he was fatally hit. The car, driven by Hussain, was travelling at 139mph (223.7kmh) just moments before impact and had run a red light. Greater Manchester Police described the incident as one of the most severe instances of speeding the force had witnessed.
Judge Nicholas Dean, presiding at Manchester Crown Court, characterised the collision as “wholly unnecessary and entirely avoidable,” stating it represented a “sustained, deliberate and escalating course of highly dangerous conduct over a prolonged period.”
Mr Abayomi’s partner, Denise, described him as “the most caring soul and gentle person you could ever meet. He had time for everybody and is loved by everyone. Syll will be sadly missed.”
