Volunteer Firefighter Arrested in France Over Massif des Maures Forest Blaze
A volunteer firefighter has been apprehended on suspicion of deliberately starting a large forest fire in the Massif des Maures area, Var department, southern France. The individual, aged 27, was reportedly a volunteer with the local fire service in the region of Vidauban.
The fire, which commenced on 16th August, devastated several thousand hectares of forest and maquis shrubland, compelling the evacuation of thousands of residents and holidaymakers. Prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the cause, with initial evidence pointing towards arson.
President Macron, during a visit to the affected area, stated that authorities would show no leniency towards individuals responsible for such destructive acts. This incident follows a pattern of numerous wildfires across France and other parts of Southern Europe, which have been attributed to unusually high temperatures and prolonged drought conditions.
