Warren Buffett Halts Donations to Bill Gates Foundation, Citing Financial Decisions
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has ended his decades-long practice of donating to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This cessation follows a personal decision by Buffett to direct his philanthropic efforts solely through the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which manages the inheritance of his late first wife.
Buffett, the chairperson of Berkshire Hathaway, has been a significant benefactor to the Gates Foundation, contributing tens of billions of USD over the years. His latest publicised donation in 2021 amounted to $3.1 billion, earmarked for the Gates Foundation and other family charities. Prior to 2021, Buffett had committed to giving away his entire Berkshire Hathaway stock holding.
The announcement regarding Buffett's altered philanthropic strategy emerges weeks after Bill Gates appeared before a US Congressional committee. Gates faced questioning regarding his past meetings and associations with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, an individual he had reportedly met on multiple occasions following Epstein's 2008 conviction.
While Buffett's statement attributes the change to personal financial and charitable decisions, the timing of the announcement has led to public discussion regarding its potential connection to the heightened scrutiny surrounding Bill Gates and his affiliations.
