Wegovy Oral Weight Loss Pill Now Accessible via Private UK Pharmacy Prescriptions
Rybelsus, an oral daily tablet from Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of the Wegovy injection, has become available for private purchase in the UK. The medication, which contains semaglutide, is already approved for managing type 2 diabetes but is now being prescribed off-label for weight loss.
Healthcare practitioners are permitted to prescribe medicines off-label if they consider it appropriate for the patient's best interests. This practice allows for flexibility in treatment, though it places greater responsibility on the prescribing clinician for monitoring and patient care.
Initially, Rybelsus faced restrictions on its availability due to supply chain pressures, with priority given to patients with type 2 diabetes. However, these restrictions have now eased, permitting its broader private use for weight management.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has previously recommended Wegovy injections for weight loss within the NHS, specifically for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) over 30, or over 27 if they have at least one weight-related comorbidity. The cost of semaglutide treatments varies, with private prescriptions for Rybelsus expected to range from £150 to £250 per month, similar to the pricing of private Wegovy injections.
