Welsh Barman Darren Summers Wins £3.5 Million Cornish Coastal Property
Darren Summers, a 50-year-old barman from Tynewydd, received an unexpected telephone call during a busy shift. The caller claimed he had won a prize, which Mr Summers promptly dismissed as a hoax, terminating the call.
Minutes later, representatives from the Omaze competition company arrived at the pub where he was working. They informed him he had, in fact, won a substantial £3.5 million property.
The Cornish Prize
The prize is a four-bedroom house situated on an acre of land, commanding views over Downderry Beach in Cornwall. Beyond the property itself, Mr Summers also received a supplementary cash prize of £250,000. He had purchased the winning entry for £20.
The coastal residence features a heated outdoor swimming pool and a hot tub. According to Omaze, the property holds an estimated rental value of between £5,000 and £8,000 per month.
Mr Summers recounted his initial disbelief: "I was in the middle of pouring pints during a busy shift behind the bar when Omaze rang. I eventually picked up but when they said I'd won a prize I thought, 'Yeah right', hung up and just carried on working. Then my colleague said there was a film crew outside."
His wife, Rebecca, was equally astonished, having been unaware that he had even entered the competition. The couple, who had never visited Cornwall previously, had only considered a camping trip to the region.
Mr Summers is now considering an early retirement, concluding his career behind the bar. He marked the occasion by offering patrons drinks on the house, describing the win as his "biggest tip ever."
