Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan Urges Voters to Elect Plaid Cymru in Campaign Gaffe
Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan made an unexpected gaffe at a campaign event in Barry Island, Vale of Glamorgan, when she told Labour members to "vote Plaid Cymru." The incident unfolded as Morgan was launching a policy costing document for Welsh Labour, intended to showcase the party's platform if it retained control of the Welsh government following the 7 May election.
During her speech, Morgan initially encouraged the crowd to "vote Welsh Labour in the election next week" before switching to Welsh and stating "pleidleisiwch Plaid Cymru." She quickly corrected herself, amending her call to "Plaid Llafur" (Labour Party).
Later, Morgan attributed the error to exhaustion, explaining that the word 'Cymru' often emerges when speaking Welsh. She reaffirmed her strong desire for the public to vote for Welsh Labour. The mistake was met with laughter and applause from the assembled supporters.
Despite the slip, Morgan dismissed suggestions that the campaign was faltering. She argued against taking risks, particularly when household bills are rising and economic stability is paramount. Labour has held power in Wales for 27 years; however, recent opinion polls indicate the party is trailing Plaid Cymru and Reform UK in the upcoming Senedd election.
