Welsh Lib Dems Pledge £300m Social Care Boost and Reject Independence at Senedd Campaign Launch
Welsh Liberal Democrats Outline Key Priorities
The Welsh Liberal Democrats today launched their Senedd election campaign, with party leader Jane Dodds predicting an increased number of Members of the Senedd (MSs) following the 7th May election. Dodds, the party's sole MS elected five years ago, highlighted the new proportional electoral system, suggesting no single party will secure an outright majority.
Speaking at a launch event in Swansea, Ms Dodds committed the party to investing an additional £300 million into social care, asserting this as crucial for protecting the National Health Service. Furthermore, she unequivocally stated that "not a penny" would be spent on any initiatives promoting Welsh independence, choosing instead to concentrate on issues directly impacting the "daily lives" of Welsh citizens.
Childcare, Business Support, and Environmental Action
Among other key policy announcements, the Welsh Liberal Democrats pledged to implement a universal package of 30 hours of free childcare for 48 weeks of the year, available to all children from nine months to four years old. The party also committed to maintaining existing business rate reliefs and reviewing recent changes to the business rates system within the next Senedd term.
Environmental pledges included additional funding for Natural Resources Wales and a proposed ban on bonuses for water company executives until sewage discharges into rivers and seas cease. Ms Dodds expressed confidence in gaining seats in several constituencies, including Caerdydd Ffynon Taf and Ceredigion Penfro, believing the party offers a "middle ground" for voters amidst a fragmented political landscape.
