Woman Charged Over 2023 Wimbledon School Crash That Killed Two Eight-Year-Old Girls
Claire Freemantle has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and seven counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, following a 2023 incident where her Land Rover crashed into The Study Prep school grounds in Wimbledon.
The crash, which occurred during an end-of-term celebration on 6 July 2023, resulted in the deaths of eight-year-old pupils Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad, with several others injured.
Initially, an investigation concluded in June 2024 with no charges against Freemantle, prosecutors attributing the incident to an undiagnosed epileptic seizure. However, the victims' parents contested this decision, arguing it was based on incomplete evidence.
The Metropolitan Police subsequently reopened the investigation in late 2024 and re-arrested Freemantle in January 2025. The parents stated they are now “one step closer to understanding why Nuria and Selena were killed”.
Separately, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating eleven Metropolitan Police officers for their conduct during the initial inquiry, including four serving officers and one former detective constable facing potential gross misconduct allegations.
