Zimbabwe Vice-President Chiwenga's Ex-Wife Marry Mubaiwa Acquitted of Attempted Murder
Marry Mubaiwa, who had been held on remand since 2019, was cleared of attempting to murder her then-husband, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga. The High Court's decision brings an end to a protracted legal battle that saw Ms Mubaiwa face numerous charges, including money laundering and fraud, all of which have now collapsed.
Prosecutors alleged Ms Mubaiwa attempted to disconnect life support and assault Mr Chiwenga while he was receiving medical treatment in South Africa in July 2019. However, the court found the evidence presented by the prosecution to be inadequate, leading to her acquittal.
Ms Mubaiwa's legal team consistently argued that the charges were politically motivated and part of a broader effort to persecute her following her separation from the Vice-President. Her seven-year detention on remand, enduring several health issues during this period, has drawn criticism from human rights advocates.
