16-17 Saver Railcard Scheme Extends Half-Price Train Fares to Eligible 18-Year-Olds

Young people in Great Britain can now access half-price train travel for longer, following an expansion of the 16-17 Saver railcard scheme. The discounted railcard, which provides 50% off most standard fares, is now available for purchase by individuals up to the day before they turn 18.

Previously, eligibility for the 16-17 Saver was strictly limited to those aged 16 and 17. This alteration permits those on the cusp of adulthood to benefit from reduced travel costs for an extended period, potentially aiding access to education, training, or employment opportunities.

The scheme applies to standard class Anytime, Off-Peak, Advance, and Season tickets on most National Rail services. Passengers using the railcard must present it alongside their ticket during their journey. This adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to make public transport more affordable for younger demographics.
