200 Patients Found Chained, Malnourished at Illegal South African Rehab Centre
Authorities in South Africa have uncovered an unregistered rehabilitation facility where 200 patients were held, many of them chained and exhibiting signs of severe neglect. Police and social workers raided the centre in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, following reports of illegal operations and patient mistreatment.
Upon entry, officials found individuals with chains on their hands and feet, some suffering from extensive sores across their bodies. Patients described being denied adequate food and medical attention. The facility reportedly housed individuals battling substance addiction and various mental health conditions.
Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini condemned the conditions, stating that the centre operated without the necessary licences and failed to meet basic health and safety standards. The patients, including numerous foreign nationals, have since been removed from the premises and are undergoing assessment for appropriate care and placement. An investigation into the centre's operators is now underway.
