Amputee's Charity Bus Challenge Interrupted by Home Burglary
Barry Mackleston, a 72-year-old amputee from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, commenced a seven-day journey from John O' Groats to Land's End, utilising only his bus pass. The former transport worker's ambitious endeavour aims to generate crucial funds for Wythenshawe Community Rugby Club, an organisation he credits with helping him recover after a life-changing accident five years ago.
Burglary Halts Progress
Four days into his 1,200-mile challenge, Mr Mackleston was informed of a burglary at his home. The incident forced him to pause his fundraising efforts and return to Wythenshawe to assess the damage and report the theft of approximately £450 in cash and other items to Greater Manchester Police.
Despite the personal distress caused by the break-in, Mr Mackleston remains resolute. He stated, "The challenge cannot fail – we have got to get to Land's End," confirming his intention to resume his journey on Saturday.
Dedication to Community Rugby
This is not Mr Mackleston's first bus pass challenge; he previously raised over £1,500 in 2025 for the same club. All proceeds from his current challenge will be directed towards improving facilities at Wythenshawe Community Rugby Club, where he has volunteered since his accident. Mr Mackleston emphasises the profound positive impact the club has had on his mental health, describing it as having "brought me back into the world again." He is driven by a desire to ensure the club's continued operation and its ability to provide for the community, particularly its younger members.
