Andy Burnham Proposes Devolved Powers to Nations and Regions After Glasgow Meeting
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has called for a radical devolution of power across the United Kingdom, asserting that a 'No Nation Left Behind' approach is vital for the nation's future. His comments followed a meeting in Glasgow with the First Ministers of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The gathering, which marked a rare inter-governmental discussion outside traditional frameworks, centred on the potential for increased autonomy for regions and cities. Burnham emphasised that the current centralised power structure was failing many parts of the UK, creating significant economic and social disparities.
He argued that devolving more decision-making and financial control would not only empower local communities but also strengthen the UK's overall cohesion. This perspective aligns with growing calls for a re-evaluation of governance models, particularly in areas grappling with limited resources and influence.
The Greater Manchester Mayor highlighted that further devolution could unlock latent potential in areas currently underserved by Westminster, providing a more equitable distribution of opportunities and resources across the country.
