Andy Burnham's Devolution Ambitions Threaten Whitehall Departments with Significant Contraction
Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones, has issued a stark warning to Whitehall officials regarding Andy Burnham's potential impact on central government. Mr Jones stated that if Mr Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, were to become Prime Minister, various government departments could face significant reductions in size and scope, with some even ‘shrinking to nothing’.
Addressing civil servants directly, Mr Jones highlighted Mr Burnham's long-standing commitment to radical devolution, suggesting this policy would fundamentally reshape the power dynamics between London and the regions. He referenced Mr Burnham’s past remarks about the need to ‘devolve and depolarise’ Britain, implying a systematic transfer of responsibilities and funding away from the capital.
The Labour Party's current stance, as articulated by Mr Jones, aims for greater decentralisation, but the specific extent of this shift under a Burnham leadership remains a point of considerable speculation within Westminster. The implications for thousands of civil service roles and the traditional operational models of government are substantial, signalling a potential paradigm shift in the governance of the United Kingdom.
