Arrest in 2004 Leeds Businessman Murder Case
A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a significant development in the investigation into the death of prominent Leeds businessman, John Luper, over two decades ago. Mr Luper, 57, was tragically killed during a robbery at his residence on Sandmoor Drive, Alwoodley, on 16th February 2004.
Details of the Incident
The incident saw Mr Luper attacked by masked intruders as he walked his dog near a neighbour's driveway late in the evening. He was subsequently dragged back to his home, where his wife, daughter, and their au pair were tied up with duct tape in an upstairs room. The perpetrators stole approximately £100,000 worth of cash and jewellery, including a distinctive Cartier watch, before absconding.
Mr Luper's wife and daughter discovered him in a downstairs room after managing to free themselves. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed asphyxiation as the cause of death.
Latest Developments and Police Appeal
The recent arrest, made in Bradford, follows the examination of new forensic materials. Detective Superintendent Damian Roebuck reiterated the police's unwavering commitment to securing justice for Mr Luper and his family. He urged anyone with information, particularly those who may have been approached about Mr Luper's business dealings around the time of the murder, or offered jewellery for sale by unknown individuals, to come forward.
“It is more than 22 years since John’s brutal murder and we are no less determined to find out who killed him,” Det Supt Roebuck stated, emphasising the vital role public information could play in the ongoing investigation.
