Body Recovered from Pickmere Lake After Search for Missing 17-Year-Old Swimmer
A body has been recovered from Pickmere Lake, Cheshire, following a search for a 17-year-old boy who went missing after entering the water. While formal identification is pending, authorities believe the deceased is the missing teenager. His family has been informed.
Specialist boat units from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service commenced searches of Pickmere Lake, situated between Knutsford and Northwich, on Tuesday afternoon. The operation was scaled back late on Tuesday evening, with Cheshire Police subsequently taking over the incident.
Open Water Dangers Highlighted
Chief Inspector Jamie Lewis commented on the tragedy: “This was a young boy who had his entire life ahead of him. Our thoughts remain with the boy’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.” Lewis underscored the significant dangers associated with swimming in open water, citing hidden currents, unseen underwater obstructions, and mud banks as potential hazards. He urged the public to consider the “potential deadly consequences” and avoid taking risks by cooling off in such locations.
This incident is one of several water-related deaths reported across England during a recent period of record-breaking temperatures. Fatalities include a 12-year-old boy whose body was discovered in the River Ribble, Lancashire, and a man in his 60s. At least five young people have died in similar circumstances during the recent heatwave.
Chief Inspector Lewis also addressed concerns regarding parking around Pickmere Lake, reminding visitors to park “safely and responsibly”. Local residents had reported difficulties accessing and exiting their homes over the Bank Holiday weekend due to inconsiderate parking. While noting that parking issues did not impede the emergency response in this particular instance, Lewis emphasised that poorly parked vehicles could “significantly delay our ability to respond” in critical situations.
