Bootle MP Peter Dowd Rejects Claims He Would Vacate Seat for Andy Burnham
Peter Dowd, who has represented Bootle since 2015, stated his intention to remain as the constituency's MP was "absolutely unequivocal." This directly refutes persistent rumours that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham might seek a pathway back to Westminster, potentially challenging Sir Keir Starmer for Labour leadership.
Burnham's ambitions for a parliamentary return were previously curtailed when Labour's ruling committee blocked his candidacy in the recent Gorton and Denton by-election. Despite this, speculation has continued, linking him with several veteran MPs reportedly considering retirement.
Dowd, whose constituency is considered Labour's safest seat, recorded the party's largest majority in 2024. He emphasised that such speculation, including constant rumours about Sir Keir's leadership, "distracts and detracts" from the parliamentary work of Labour MPs. "We just need to end the speculation, and certainly in my case, I've ended it," Dowd asserted.
Links between Burnham and Bootle arise from his birth in Aintree, located in the adjacent Walton constituency. Last month, Burnham himself dismissed as "fiction" suggestions that St Helens South MP Marie Rimmer was facing pressure to resign in exchange for a peerage, another rumour circulating within party circles.
