Bradley Murdoch Refused to Disclose Peter Falconio's Remains Location in Final Police Interview
New South Wales authorities have released video of Bradley Murdoch's final police interview, recorded just weeks before his death at a Sydney prison in January 2024. The footage captures Murdoch, 67, repeatedly refusing to reveal the location of Peter Falconio's body, for which he was convicted of murder more than two decades ago.
Falconio, a 28-year-old British backpacker, was murdered in the remote Northern Territory outback in July 2001. His girlfriend, Joanne Lees, survived the attack, managing to escape after being bound and gagged. Murdoch was found guilty in 2005 and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and assault, despite Falconio's remains never being recovered.
The interview shows Murdoch unresponsive to direct questions about the body's location, instead focusing on his own perceived injustices and claiming he was an innocent man. Detective Superintendent Andrew Black from the New South Wales Police remarked on the missed opportunity to provide closure for Mr. Falconio's family. This persistent silence underscores the enduring mystery surrounding the murder and the Western Australian authorities' ongoing commitment to locate the remains, offering a stark reminder of unresolved state-sponsored violence and the elusive nature of justice for victims.
