China Evacuates Hundreds of Thousands in Zhejiang as Typhoon Bavi Approaches
China has initiated extensive evacuations across its eastern Zhejiang province as Typhoon Bavi, the second such storm to affect the region within a week, approaches landfall. Authorities have moved hundreds of thousands of residents from coastal areas, with the city of Wenzhou identified as being in the direct trajectory of the storm.
Meteorological agencies have issued high-level warnings for strong winds and heavy rainfall expected across the province. Emergency services are mobilised, and infrastructure, including public transport and power grids, are bracing for potential disruption.
This latest meteorological event follows closely on the heels of another significant typhoon, exacerbating concerns about potential flooding and damage to agricultural land and urban areas already saturated from previous rainfall. The repeated impact of severe weather events highlights the ongoing challenges faced by China's coastal regions in mitigating the effects of increasingly frequent and intense typhoons.
