Brighton's West Pier Section Collapses into Sea During Storm Austen
A section of Brighton's iconic West Pier detached and fell into the sea as Storm Austen battered the Sussex coast. Visual evidence captured the moment large waves eroded the structure, leading to its dramatic collapse.
The West Pier, a Grade I listed building, has been in a derelict state for decades, enduring years of neglect and multiple fires. Despite its ruined condition, it remains a prominent feature of the Brighton seafront and a symbol of Victorian architectural ambition.
Coastal authorities have repeatedly warned the public to maintain a safe distance from the pier due to its unstable condition. Further erosion and structural degradation are anticipated with continued exposure to severe weather events.
