Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Addresses Plagiarism Allegations, Concedes Errors

Professor Jason Arday, the youngest Black professor at Cambridge University, has publicly responded to accusations of plagiarism and issues with citations in his academic output. Arday conceded that 'errors' were present in his work, but firmly denied intentionally misleading his audience or fabricating content, describing himself as 'not a liar'.

The controversy emerged after a blog post scrutinised Arday's published articles and his 2021 doctoral thesis from Glasgow University, alleging instances where proper attribution was lacking and where significant portions of text appeared to be directly copied.

Arday stated that these 'errors' were unintentional, attributing them to poor referencing and the challenges of producing extensive academic work under pressure. He maintained that his intentions were always to cite sources accurately.

Cambridge University initiated a formal investigation into the allegations in February 2024. A spokesperson confirmed the ongoing nature of the review, stating that it is being conducted 'in accordance with the university's procedures'.

This scrutiny follows Arday's rapid ascent in academia, having been appointed to a professorship at Cambridge in 2023. His previous roles included professorships at Glasgow and Durham universities. The allegations pose a significant challenge to a career marked by groundbreaking achievements in British higher education.
