Camden Council Approves £100 Fines for Public Alcohol Consumption Violations
Camden Council has introduced a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), taking effect in July, authorising enforcement officers and police to issue £100 fines for violations related to public alcohol consumption. The order permits officers to demand individuals stop drinking and confiscate alcohol if they are involved in antisocial behaviour. Refusal to comply will result in the aforementioned penalty.
While not an outright prohibition on drinking in public spaces such as parks, the PSPO aims to address community concerns linked to certain types of alcohol consumption. Local consultations highlighted issues including individuals refusing to leave parks, public urination, excessive noise, and verbal abuse towards passers-by.
This initiative, enabled by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, replaces previous measures like designated public place orders. Camden councillors stated the order targets antisocial behaviour while acknowledging that most public alcohol consumption in the borough is responsible. Similar restrictions are already in force across many other London boroughs, including Haringey, Islington, and Westminster.
The PSPO will remain in effect for three years, after which the council will review its continuation. It will be enforced throughout Camden, with the exception of Hampstead Heath, which falls under the jurisdiction of the City of London Corporation.
