Catherine West Leadership Challenge Reveals Deep Fissures Within Labour Party
Former Labour minister Catherine West has mounted the first open challenge to Sir Keir Starmer's leadership, triggering widespread consternation and frustration among party members. Her public intervention, initially dismissed as 'bonkers' by some former frontbenchers, has revealed deep-seated anxieties following recent electoral setbacks.
Starmer's Position Under Scrutiny
West claims to have the backing of 10 Members of Parliament, a considerable distance from the 81 required to formally trigger a leadership contest. While some within the party suggest her challenge is unlikely to gain momentum, others believe it could catalyse broader opposition to Starmer's continued tenure.
Downing Street has attempted to minimise the significance of West's actions, and various leadership hopefuls have denied any involvement. However, private discussions regarding Starmer's future are reportedly fervent, with some anticipating further moves from potential challengers in the coming days.
The Andy Burnham Factor
A significant element in the ongoing internal machinations is the role of Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. As he is not a sitting MP, Burnham is currently ineligible to stand in any leadership contest. His supporters advocate for Starmer to announce a timetable for his departure, a move they believe would clear the path for Burnham's return to Westminster without necessitating a divisive contest.
Approximately 20 MPs publicly advocate for Starmer to set a departure date, with an additional 10 reportedly wanting his immediate exit. This strategy aims to avoid a messy power struggle by facilitating a smooth transition to Burnham's leadership. However, West's current challenge, if it gains traction, would prevent Burnham from entering the fray.
Sir Keir Starmer, conversely, has publicly affirmed his intention to lead the party into the next general election and serve a second term as Prime Minister, rejecting both an abrupt and an orderly departure. Whispers within Westminster suggest that only resignations at cabinet level might force a reconsideration of his stance. Starmer is scheduled to deliver a speech this Monday outlining his values, ahead of the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday, where the government will detail its legislative agenda.
