CCTV Footage Challenges Official Account of Allan Marshall's Scottish Prison Death
New CCTV footage has emerged, challenging the official account of how Allan Marshall died after being restrained by prison officers at HMP Edinburgh in March 2015. The video evidence, recently obtained, shows Mr Marshall, a 30-year-old prisoner, being dragged across a prison hall by officers while naked and unresponsive. This directly contradicts earlier statements and evidence presented during legal proceedings.
Mr Marshall was held face down with a towel over his head for several minutes following a struggle with officers. He subsequently stopped breathing and died four days later in hospital. A Fatal Accident Inquiry in 2018 concluded his death was 'entirely preventable'. However, it did not find any individual officer culpable, a decision criticised by Mr Marshall's family and human rights organisations.
The newly surfaced footage reveals a more extensive and protracted use of force than previously acknowledged, undermining the official narrative that has stood for years. Concerns have been repeatedly raised by civilian oversight bodies regarding the transparency and accountability of Scottish prison authorities in incidents involving restraint-related deaths.
