Cheshire Teenager Chiedza Nyanjowa Dies After Swimming Incident at Formby Beach
Chiedza Nyanjowa, a 15-year-old from Cheshire, succumbed to critical injuries sustained during a swimming incident at Formby Beach. Merseyside Police confirmed that the teenager, who had been admitted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in a critical condition on Bank Holiday Monday, died on Saturday.
Emergency services were dispatched to Albert Road, Formby Beach, at approximately 15:30 BST following calls regarding a person in difficulty in the sea. Members of the public had attempted to assist Ms Nyanjowa prior to the arrival of first responders.
Her family issued a statement expressing gratitude to those who tried to help, adding that Chiedza would be "greatly missed and remembered for her kind spirit." They described her as "a bubbly person" who "loved Christ and going to church," and aspired to be a nurse. The family requested prayers during this difficult time.
This incident follows a series of at least 13 water-related deaths across the UK during recent warmer weather. These include a 12-year-old boy in the River Ribble, Lancashire, and a 17-year-old boy at Pick Mere lake, Cheshire. Other fatalities involved young people in Kent, Oxford, Lincoln, Halifax, Rotherham, Warwickshire, Farnborough, Nottinghamshire, and Scotland, alongside older individuals in Cornwall and Wales.
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) has reiterated warnings concerning water safety. They highlighted that despite warmer air temperatures, water bodies often remain very cold, posing a risk of cold water shock that can impede swimming ability and exit from the water. The RLSS advises anyone witnessing a water emergency to call 999, remain out of the water themselves, and attempt to throw a buoyant object to the person in distress.
