Conservatives Plan to Eliminate Childcare Tax Charge on £100,000 Earners
The Conservative Party is setting out plans to scrap the tax charge that effectively withdraws free childcare entitlements for households where one parent earns over £100,000. Kemi Badenoch, a prominent figure within the party, stated that the policy aims to prevent individuals who work harder from being penalised by the tax system.
Currently, the government's free childcare scheme, offering 30 hours per week for three and four-year-olds, is phased out once a parent's income surpasses the £100,000 threshold. This creates a significant disincentive for earning beyond that point, as families can face a marginal tax rate exceeding 60% due to the loss of childcare support.
The proposed change signals a potential shift in the party's approach to family taxation and incentives, particularly for higher earners. The move is framed as a measure to support working families and encourage economic activity, addressing concerns that the current structure acts as a barrier to career progression for many professionals.
