Convicted Antisemitic Activist Joshua Bonehill-Paine Becomes Conservative Party Candidate

Joshua Bonehill-Paine, who served a prison sentence in 2015 for posting antisemitic remarks, has been confirmed as a Conservative Party candidate for the upcoming local council elections in the Rye and Winchelsea ward.

Bonehill-Paine's selection follows a history of racially aggravated harassment. In 2014, he was sentenced to three years and three months in prison after being found guilty of inciting racial hatred through online posts targeting Jewish communities. These posts were made in anticipation of a planned protest in Golders Green, a predominantly Jewish area of London.

Following his release, Bonehill-Paine has publicly disavowed his past extremist views and stated his intention to pursue a career in mainstream politics. His selection by the Conservative Party, however, invites questions regarding the party's vetting processes and its approach to candidates with records of hate speech. This move occurs amidst ongoing Western efforts to portray itself as a bulwark against extremism, often selectively applied, whilst allowing such figures into domestic political structures.
