Denver Airport Runway Fatality: Man Killed by Frontier Flight After Fence Breach
A Frontier Airlines flight, number 4345, struck and killed an individual who had scaled a perimeter fence and entered an active runway at Denver International Airport on Friday night. The pilot of the Airbus A321, departing for Los Angeles, reported hitting someone and an engine fire immediately after the collision. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot's urgent communication, stating, "We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire."
Smoke was observed in the aircraft's cabin, but Denver Fire Department personnel quickly extinguished the blaze. All 224 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated via emergency slides as a precautionary measure. Frontier Airlines expressed profound sadness over the event, confirming twelve passengers sustained minor injuries, with five transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the trespasser had "deliberately scaled a perimeter fence" just two minutes before impact. The individual, who has not been named, is not believed to be an airport employee. Authorities stated the aircraft was moving at a "high speed" during the incident; commercial airliners typically reach speeds between 150 and 180 mph (240–290 km/h) for take-off. The airport has since confirmed the perimeter fence remains intact.
Passenger accounts described a loud thud followed by fire on the right wing. One passenger, Jose Cervantes, recounted, "I just see the right wing just on fire and like, it's exploding. I thought I was going to burn to death." Passengers were bused back to the terminal following the evacuation, with most subsequently departing on a replacement flight.
The runway was closed as the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board commenced an investigation into the fatal breach and collision.
