Donald Trump Demands US Federal Reserve Interest Rate Reduction After Strong Job Report
Former US President Donald Trump has issued a direct demand for the Federal Reserve to drastically cut interest rates, stating the central bank should "go to zero" or even "start paying" the United States. His remarks were made on social media, immediately after the publication of robust employment data for May.
The US economy added 272,000 jobs last month, a figure considerably higher than economists had predicted. This unexpected strength in the labour market led analysts to project an increased likelihood of the Federal Reserve maintaining, or even raising, current interest rates to control inflation.
However, Mr Trump, currently the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, criticised the Fed's existing monetary policy, describing it as an impediment to economic growth. He asserted that the current rates are "killing our Country" and limiting the potential for expansion. The former president has historically advocated for lower interest rates, frequently pressuring the central bank during his previous term.
The Federal Reserve's primary mandate includes managing inflation and ensuring maximum employment. Its decisions on interest rates are closely watched globally, influencing everything from mortgage rates to the cost of borrowing for businesses. The central bank has been under consistent scrutiny, particularly from political figures who often seek to influence its independent policy decisions for perceived economic advantage.
