E-bike Injury Payouts Reach £110 Million, Raising UK Insurance Costs
E-bike injury payouts in the UK have exceeded £110 million, directly impacting motor insurance premiums for all drivers. Data from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) reveals a substantial increase in claims stemming from incidents involving electric bicycles and other micromobility vehicles.
Rising Claims and Financial Burdens
The first injury claim related to a micromobility vehicle was recorded a mere seven years ago. Since then, the volume and cost of these claims have escalated rapidly, with the MIB indicating that millions of pounds are now being paid out annually. This financial burden is distributed across all insured drivers through higher premiums, a consequence of the MIB's mandate to compensate victims of uninsured or untraceable drivers.
While e-bikes offer an alternative to traditional transport, their proliferation has introduced new challenges for road safety and insurance liability. The legal framework surrounding these vehicles, particularly their use on public roads and footpaths, continues to be a point of contention among policymakers and road safety advocates.
