Eight Students Arrested Following Deadly Dormitory Fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, Kenya
Eight students have been detained by Kenyan police following a suspected arson attack that resulted in the deaths of 16 pupils at Utumishi Girls Academy. The fire erupted in the early hours of Thursday morning at the institution, located approximately 120km (77 miles) north-west of Nairobi, engulfing the upper floor of a dormitory equipped with 135 bunk beds.
The National Police Service confirmed that, after extensive interviews with students and staff, and a forensic examination of CCTV footage, eight pupils were identified as “persons of interest in connection with the planning and execution” of the blaze. These individuals were traced to their homes or within the school vicinity and subsequently taken into custody for questioning.
The eight arrested students were among 30 initially recalled to the school by detectives investigating the fatal incident. The exact cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
Kenya has a troubling history of school fires, with numerous incidents over recent decades. Two years prior, a dormitory fire in central Kenya claimed at least 21 lives. Many such fires in boarding schools are attributed to arson, often linked to disgruntled pupils protesting discipline or living conditions. Overcrowding in dormitories and inadequate adherence to safety protocols, such as blocked exits and locked windows, are frequently cited as factors contributing to high casualty counts in these tragedies.
