Elderly Father Faces 'Awful Stress' as Severely Disabled Son's Care Package Ends
Alphie Lonergan, an 84-year-old father from Loughgilly, County Armagh, has spoken of the "awful, awful stress" he is experiencing as a care package for his son, Donall, is due to end. Mr Lonergan is the primary carer for his two adult sons, Ronan and Donall, both in their 40s, who live with severe learning disabilities.
Care Cuts Amid Staff Shortages
The care package, once providing three hours of support for both sons, was significantly reduced for one son earlier this year. Donall, who also has autism and obsessive-compulsive disorder, currently receives an hour of daily care to assist him with his morning routine. This crucial support is now set to be withdrawn.
The Southern Health Trust has apologised for the distress caused but cites difficulties in recruiting and retaining social care staff, particularly in rural areas, as the reason for the decision. Despite ongoing efforts to explore alternative options and review rotas, the Trust has yet to secure additional capacity.
Family's Growing Burden
Mr Lonergan, whose wife's dying wish was for him to care for their children, highlighted the physical and mental toll of his caring responsibilities. He explained the challenges of assisting Donall, who requires significant help to start his day. Both sons attend day centres, but at home, Mr Lonergan is their sole carer. His two daughters also provide support, but the increased reliance on them adds to their own pressures as they balance jobs and families.
Furthermore, Mr Lonergan struggles with sleep due to Donall's nocturnal routines, stating he "can't switch off." The uncertainty surrounding Donall's care package is having a profound impact on the entire family's well-being.
The situation comes amid broader concerns regarding social care provision, following revelations in November that some social care staff would not benefit from a pay offer extended to other Northern Ireland healthcare workers, despite funding being made available for the Real Living Wage.
