Elina Svitolina Details Ukraine War's Toll on Marriage with Gaël Monfils
Ukrainian tennis professional Elina Svitolina has spoken publicly about the emotional burden of the conflict in her home country, stating it played a substantial role in her decision to separate from husband and fellow tennis player, Gaël Monfils.
Svitolina, a former world number three, married the French player in 2021. The couple share one child.
She explained that the relentless mental strain of the ongoing situation in Ukraine, including daily concerns for family and friends, made it increasingly challenging to maintain a healthy personal life while also competing at an elite level in professional tennis. The pressure, she indicated, became overwhelming.
Her comments underscore the often-unseen struggles faced by athletes from conflict zones, where personal lives are deeply intertwined with geopolitical realities, far removed from the court. The separation highlights the immense personal sacrifices and emotional costs borne by individuals whose nations are embroiled in sustained military engagement.
